Retired Life in our Country Garden
Welcome to my blog! I’m so happy you’re here.
My name is Penny and I live in Oklahoma. I’m a homebody who is always looking for opportunities to learn and create. One of my creative outlets is the blog where I share retired life in our country garden with you.
My husband, Bill, and I were both Agricultural Leadership professors at Oklahoma State University until both of us decided to retire a few years early. Bill officially retired in 2020 at the age of 59 and I retired a year later at the age of 55.
I live in the country in my forever home with my amazing and talented husband (aka, the veggie gardener and sourdough baker). Our children have left the nest and live in three different states. Both of our girls graduated from Oklahoma State University before moving off to Texas and Colorado. And our son served in the U.S. Marine Corps before moving to DC and graduating from George Mason University.
My husband, Bill, and I spend the majority of our free time on the farm, gardening, tending to the chickens and whipping up new recipes in the kitchen. I often have a camera in my hand, and I love the creativity that comes with sharing retired life in our country garden with you. One of my favorite photos I’ve ever captured is one of our hens in our field of crimson clover, pictured below.
A Few Fun Facts About Me (and Bill)
I grew up in small town in Texas between Houston and Galveston. Bill grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Illinois.
Prior to retirement, everything I knew about gardening, Bill taught me. And then I retired and started flower gardening. I’ve made lots of mistakes, read a lot, and learned lots on my own. I love sharing it all with you.
I also love to junk especially at estate sales. I love junking so much that I first started my Instagram page to share my love for vintage. Now that I’m retired, I focus on sharing retired life in our country garden along with farm fresh recipes, our country home and my love for vintage.
I love to swim and have tried swimming in our pond a few times. However, the fish won’t leave me alone, so I swim several times a week at a local indoor pool. When I’m at the pool, Bill is typically volunteering at our local food pantry.
Farm fresh veggies and homemade bread are definitely my favorite foods. Bill makes sourdough bread every week and I love to make garden focaccia. We also can any of our homegrown veggies, especially tomatoes, that we don’t manage to eat fresh off the vine.
We have two rescue animals. 1. Frank, Bill’s orange and ornery cat, that he rescued from our local animal shelter; and 2. Midge, my sweet pointer, that found her way to our home summer 2023. She picked us and we’re so glad she did.
Let’s Celebrate (Retired) Life Together
As I share our retired life in our country garden with you, I hope that I inspire you to celebrate spending time at home. Our homes are the best place on Earth. Let’s celebrate and shower our homes with love. AND create our own personal retreats filled with peace, love and lots of flowers.
Cheers to retired life, and as always, happy gardening!
